Born in the U.S. to Zimbabwean parents, Chiwoniso is an internationally heralded and award-winning singer, songwriter and mbira (thumb piano) player. Chiwoniso grew up working in family groups (her father was acclaimed mbira master Dumisani Maraire) and later performed in such popular bands as A Peace of Ebony, Zimbabwe’s first hip-hop group,before launching her solo performing career in 2001. Her music blends the traditional music of Zimbabwe with soul, blues and rock, and she is an outspoken advocate in her music for human rights and social justice.
