On Wednesday, January 27, Cityfolk will host a FREE showing of two Appalshop films--From Wood To Singing Guitar, Shawn Lind's profile of guitarist and master guitar builder Wayne Henderson, and Mimi Pickering's superb portrait of pioneering singer and songwriter Hazel Dickens It's Hard To Tell The Singer From The Song. Pickering will be on hand to introduce her film and take questions from the audience. In case you are unfamiliar with these two superb artists, here's a taste.
Luthier and guiter player Wayne Henderson is as modest as he is talented. You may remember him from the Cityfolk Festival a couple of years ago, and the Masters of the Steel String Guitar tour before that. Here he describes his technique a little bit before launching into 'Steel Guitar Rag.'
When bluegrass singer Hazel Dickens was inducted into the West Virginia Hall of Fame, she performed her song 'West Virginia, My Home', accompanied by Tim & Mollie O'Brien. Her age is apparent as she gets ready to perform, but her voice is as clear and strong as ever.
