When virtuoso Israeli percussionist Chen Zimbalista hits the stage at UD's Boll Theatre on February 10, it will be a chance for Dayton audiences to experience one of the more free wheeling (and free spirited) musicians on the planet. He's astounded audiences on several continents with his explosive, unclassifiable percussion concerts. Using his hands, feet and head to play more than 40 instruments on stage, including the marimba, temple blocks, cymbals, Chinese bells, snare and hand drums, tambourines, gongs and cymbals, Zimbalista creates a hypnotic, seductive groove.
If that wasn't enough, he will be joined onstage by perhaps the finest drummer in jazz, Lewis Nash. Nash has appeared on the Cityfolk Jazz Series with pianists Larry Willis and Khalid Moss and was recently showcased on a North American tour celebrating the 70th anniversary of the storied jazz label Blue Note Records.
It's impossible to give you a true sense of what to expect in just a couple of YouTube clips, but these will help display the range of talent Zimbalista possesses.
